For more than 20 years, Muhuba Hussen has been a member of the Royal Women’s Hospital team in Melbourne, working as a Patient Services Assistant with ISS.

In her role, she supports patients and clinical teams in one of Australia’s most complex and fast-paced healthcare environments. Her work contributes to the daily running of the hospital – maintaining patient areas, supporting comfort, and helping ensure teams can focus on delivering care.

But some moments stand out more than others.

After finishing her shift, Muhuba was contacted by the team, while on her way home, so she returned to the hospital to support a patient in emergency labour who did not speak English.

As the situation quickly progressed to surgery, she provided clarity and reassurance when it was needed most.

Using a shared language and cultural understanding, Muhuba stayed with the patient through surgery and birth – offering continuity, reassurance and a calm presence throughout the experience.

“It was such a kind and caring thing to do, and well beyond what would ever be expected,” said Tracey Lawson, Manager – Facility and PPP Management at the Royal Women’s Hospital.

Lasting impact

Months later, the significance of that moment was still felt. The patient later introduced Muhuba to others as the person who had supported her through one of the most important experiences of her life.

Recognised globally

In 2026, Muhuba was awarded ISS’ Global Apple Award at the Global Leadership Conference in Denmark – the organisation’s highest individual honour.

The award recognises Placemakers who demonstrate service excellence and make a meaningful difference in the environments where they work.

Selected from finalists across ISS globally, Muhuba’s recognition reflects both her individual contribution and the work happening across ISS teams in healthcare every day.

The role of placemaking in healthcare

Muhuba’s story highlights the often unseen role ISS teams play in healthcare environments – working alongside clinical teams and supporting spaces where patients feel safe, understood and cared for. It is a reminder that placemaking in healthcare is not only about the work environment, but about the deeply human experience within it.
