Parliament House Pest Control
Australia’s politicians deal with significant issues throughout the year, including international relations, complicated policy decisions, the latest opinion polls, and moths. Yes, moths.
Canberra, our nation’s capital city, is not only host to political parties and the heads of the Federal Government, but happens to be directly in the migratory path of the Bogong moth. Each spring, millions of these winged insects pass through Canberra.
And since 1988, when the new Parliament House was opened, and the bright, moth-attracting lights illuminating the massive Australian flag above it were switched on, the moths have been a problem.
While measures such as reduced or turned off lighting have managed to reduce the numbers of Bogong Moths which get “trapped” by the lights, a sizeable number still perish around and in Parliament House.
With the presence of so many dead moths, vermin quickly begin to feed and breed. Since 2008, ISS has provided Pest Control services for Parliament House, and has quickly begun work to combat pests and vermin throughout Parliament House’s 4,700 rooms and the surrounding 23 hectares of native trees, shrubs and gardens.
“As a client, Parliament House requires a high degree of flexibility for a number of reasons, including strict scheduling requirements, national security arrangements and political requirements of the client. By utilising a day-by-day scheduling approach, we are able to make sure that Parliament House receives the highest level of pest control services, as well as maximising convenience for the users,” said Jonathon Moulds, ISS Executive General Manager Open Space and Route Based Services.
“ISS continues to demonstrate its position as the peak facility services company in Australia. With such a strong endorsement from the Federal Government, it is clear that ISS continues to achieve its mission of leading facility services globally, by leading facility services locally,” continued Jonathon.
